Dr. Sylvia A. Earle
National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence
This was a very special trip hosted by Direcor Nicolas Ibargüen of the abc* Foundation. Check out the video above to understand the expedition's purpose.
From the abc* Foundation's website:
The most recent expedition was to the Cocos Island, a remote and ecologically pristine Costa Rican national park and an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Influential leaders from the Americas, along with National Geographic explorers Sylvia Earle and Enric Sala, explored the island's lush tropical forest, scuba dived amongst the large populations of sharks and other marine life, and took a state-of-the-art submersible deep into the sea. The outcome of this journey was the abc* program advocating for increased Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) throughout Latin America. Through the MPAs initiative, the abc* Foundation and its community strive to bring the world a step closer to restoring oceans to their full productivity.
